Lead Remington Bronze 1895 "The Cheyenne" FOUNDRY STAMP
Description
Frederic Remington (1861-1909) bronze "The Cheyenne", 20"H x 22"L x 10.75"W. Mounted on a marble base. The statue bears the stamp, "Henry-Bonnard Bronze Co., Founders, NY, 1895," in bronze at its base. The artist's signature also has the word "Copyright" in front of Remington's name. Frederic Remington is best known for his art depicting the cowboys, soldiers and Native Americans of the Old West. Remington worked for the great magazines of the 1880s and 1890s, such as “Harper’s Weekly” and “Colliers,” creating images of soldiers, cowboys and Indians that shaped the nations’ - and the world's - perception of the American west. Over the course of his career he produced over 3,000 drawings and paintings, 22 bronze sculptures, a novel, a Broadway play and over 100 articles and stories. It wasn’t until the mid-1800s that Remington began sculpting. Two of his most famous pieces are “The Bronco Buster” and “The Cheyenne.” Remington is credited for giving his sculptures “detail, movement and life.”
